ACC Championship Game/Pre-Bowls and What Knowledge We’ve Gained

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

Really long title today, but some good stuff to discuss…

For my final regular season ranking of the ACC, check out my ACC Power Poll.

ACC Championship Game/Pre-Bowls and What Knowledge We’ve Gained

We were oh-so-close to be right on our projection in the ACC Championship Game, but Georgia Tech’s offense made one more play and Clemson could not answer.

ACC Champion: Georgia Tech

When you rush for 333 yards for 3 TDs and hit every field goal, it’s your night. Georgia Tech was able to slowly grind-out against Clemson’s defense that did all it really could against them. The Jackets had the fear of the big play in the hearts of the Clemson Nation on every play. Coach Johnson has the potential to build a monster at Georgia Tech if he can continue to recruit the quality of player that he has right now, but we will see. This is a landmark victory for the Jackets as it is their first title in 19 years and possibly the first of many to come.

As for Clemson: C.J. Spiller was incredible. He is a champion in my book with his 4 TD and 233 rushing yard day(not counting all the return and receiving yards he went for). Spiller more than deserved his ACC Championship MVP and I hope he goes to  New York for the Heisman ceremonies. We’ve touched on the defense so let’s continue to praise the offense who matched the Jackets’ 300+ rushing yard day with one of their own and were dominant when they were not throwing interceptions. Clemson QB Kyle Parker made a couple of bad decisions, but he also made the necessary throws in key situations–the game certainly does not fall on him. Clemson’s ability to line up and run the ball will be a key going into next year when they lose their top two receiving threats in Jacoby Ford and Michael Palmer–and with guys like Andre Ellington and Jamie Harper to carry the ball–they will do just fine.

ACC Bowl Fun

>The ACC looks to go back-to-back with BCS wins with the champion Jackets who hope to shake-off a disappointing performance last season in the bowl season. A couple of outlets have a matchup with a team that a lot of people feel should be in the BCS National Championship Game with the TCU Horned Frogs–while others have a matchup with Iowa(cue depressing music, man I don’t want to see that–boring). It all depends on if the BCS selects a Boise State-TCU matchup in the Fiesta.

>According to reports, Virginia Tech will be the choice for Chick-Fil-A Bowl which will set into motion the Gator Bowl taking a 6-6(4-4 in ACC) Florida State team over every other ACC bowl elgible team with a better record(presented without comment). The Hokies get Tennessee in a winnable game, but the Vols running game is dangerous. FSU plays West Virginia in a rematch of Bobby Bowden vs. his old team for his last game as Noles’ coach. Florida State is talented enough to run with West Virginia and could pull off the upset despite their unimpressive record, but the defense will be the key.

>The ACC Championship losers in Clemson go to Nashville most likely to face Kentucky in a rematch of the 2007 Music City Bowl–gotta like the Tigers here, but then again, the teams are pretty similar to back then when the ‘Cats won.

>Miami will be a good get for the Champ Sports Bowl with how well they have played this season against a usually strong Big Ten team in this game. Jacory Harris and a lot of his Northwestern High School brethren on the Canes could be facing a different one from the Big Ten.

>It’s amazing what one loss can do to a team for Clemson and for North Carolina as they will be playing in a relative home game in Charlotte for the Meineke Car Care Bowl. They could be playing a strong Pittsburgh team that could be a nice notch in the ACC’s belt for a win.

>Out West we go to San Francisco with Boston College and they could be face either one of the Bay Area teams of Cal and Stanford. They will be underdogs in either game, but BC has a knack for proving people wrong.

Thoughts on an outstanding ACC Championship Game? C.J. Spiller for Heisman?(Yes.) Any bowl matchups that intrigue you? FSU to Gator thoughts? Have at it…

ACC Championship Preview: Georgia Tech vs. Clemson

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

This is a simulcast with my site at On The B. Rink…enjoy the game!

It’s here–the culmination of an entire season of ACC football comes down to the play of Clemson and Georgia Tech in Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. Here’s how I see it going down…

  • 12/05/09  Clemson Tigers vs. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets / 4LN / 8:00 p.m. ET

The Lead: The Tigers and Jackets rematch coming off rivalry losses and a trip to Miami on their minds. Both offenses are explosive while the defenses have a lot to prove Saturday.

Watch 4 Clemson Offense vs. Georgia Tech Defense: Clemson to Win Out Embarrassment Face-Off

Both sides of the ball are going to play mad Saturday as GT’s D struggled vs. UGA and Clemson’s offense had a number of issues against South Carolina. With experienced and deadly skill players on the Tigers’ side, I give them the edge. I don’t expect Georgia Tech to be dismantled in the running game like they were against Georgia, but Clemson will attempt to. GT gave up 7.7 yards a rush against Georgia and 5.4 a rush against Virginia Tech in the friendly confines of Bobby Dodd Stadium. Recently, the oddity was giving up only 1.1 a rush vs. Wake Forest. Clemson had 3.4 yards a rush against the Jackets earlier this season. The Tigers will try to do what Georgia did–not be as effective–adjust back to spreading the field and exposing mismatches with Spiller, Ford, and Palmer/Allen.

Watch 4 Georgia Tech Offense vs. Clemson Defense: Georgia Tech to Wreck Clemson Defense Often

Clemson will stop them at certain junctions, but the Tigers will have to out-score the Jackets to win. Georgia Tech has what Clemson did to them on film and Johnson is a mastermind that adjustments(or so I’m told lol). Turnovers are the great equalizer though and with this style of offense they can be prevalent. What Georgia Tech cannot do here is get cute–they have to run the ball…and then run the ball some more…and run the ball after that. Clemson will take advantage of Johnson trying to open it up with the pass with a secondary that is experienced and always ready for an interception.

Watch 4 Georgia Tech Special Teams vs. Clemson Special Teams: Game Will Hinge on FGs and Kick Returns

The most dangerous aspect to C.J. Spiller returning kicks is not always the return, but the kicking away from him that gives Clemson great field possession. He is a game-changer with his 7 kick returns for TDs. Paul Johnson does not seem too keen on having a kicker deciding the game for him, but the Jackets’ Blair hit the game-tying and winning field goals on September 10. For Clemson, Richard Jackson did hit a big field goal against South Carolina last week, but had struggled before then.

Watch 4 Georgia Tech Coaching vs. Clemson Coaching: Experience Factor is Vastly Overrated

The way I see it here–all of the Johnson with years of experience vs. Swinney in his first year as a big advantage is a bunch of bunk. Basically what we have is Swinney/Napier vs. Wommack and Johnson vs. Steele. Steele has plenty of experience and did a solid job earlier this season. Up until last week, Napier has looked like a genius down the stretch while the same cannot be said for his opponent.

What Happens: Georgia Tech is favored for a reason. If they are running on all cylinders, they should win–but are they? Yeah, I saw the Clemson-South Carolina game last week–but being inconsistent is what Clemson does. They look like a top ten team one week–lose a mind-blowing game somewhere else. Clemson has enough talent to scare the heck out of any team, but pulling it together is the issue. Georgia Tech has talent, but execution is crucial in Johnson’s offense and the wheels can come off with that defense when they do not. I say that all to point out–Clemson is not the better team scheme-wise–maybe even coaching-wise, but they should win all things considered because they have one of the only defenses in the ACC that can run with Georgia Tech and the offense to keep the Jackets off-balance with Napier if he plays his cards right.

Pick: Tigers 31 Jackets 26

I was right with Georgia Tech over Clemson earlier this season–do I pull off the reverse pick here in the ACC Championship Game? Would like to see your picks and thoughts behind them…

Week 12 of ACC Games and What Knowledge We’ve Gained

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Just another week in the ACC, craziness reigns as we go into the ACC Championship Game…

Week 12 of ACC Games: What Knowledge We’ve Gained

(Graphic per TheACC)

With both title game participants losing to rivals, there are more questions than answers right now between Clemson and Georgia Tech. I will be researching every angle and giving my prediction for the game later this week, but here are my thoughts right now.

ACC Champion: Clemson

What can you get from two losses? The Tigers are in a better position coming out of the games with just how many miscues were made and injuries were sustained by Georgia Tech. Clemson played its worst offensive game this season on the road at their rival. Everything that could go wrong–did. Georgia Tech played its worst offensive game this season which was aided by an injury to their star QB Nesbitt who would return, but not really the same as he was pre-injury. Both defenses struggled also, I give the decided edge to Clemson’s defense when you match them up. The Jackets’ defense was mauled by the Bulldogs–Clemson cannot do exactly the same to them, but the Tigers put up quite a few points on them in their earlier meeting. The absolute key to either team winning is jumping on the opponent early.

Bowl Projections

Orange: Clemson
Clemson is the automatic qualifier with one more loss and very well could face an undefeated team as there are still 6 of them.

Chick-Fil-A: Virginia Tech
The Hokies are the best option out there at 9-3 and are arguably the best team in the ACC at this point.

Gator: Georgia Tech
Going 0-2 down the stretch, the Jackets play in the last year of the Gator Bowl’s tie-in with the ACC.

Champ Sports: Miami
The Canes finished strong in Tampa vs. South Florida and are rewarded with a trip to Orlando.

Music City: North Carolina
The Music City really is left with no option but to take UNC as they do not want another FSU vs. Kentucky nor BC.

Meineke Car Care: Florida State
FSU is coming off a destruction at the Swamp, but the Noles still have that name-recognition for tickets and some alumni in the area.

Emerald: Boston College
Good news BC–you might miss Southern Cal. Bad news BC–you might get Toby Gerhart and the Stanford Cardinal in a virtual home game.

Slant and Gos

>Virginia Tech capped off another impressive season with a blowout road victory over rival UVA. Ryan Williams should get strong consideration for ACC Player of the Year as he was what kept the Hokies offense going this season. It is weird not see to Virginia Tech in an ACC Championship Game, but they still had a solid season and could have done a little more.

>The other ACC Championship representative from last season also finished off another solid season at Boston College with a 19-17 road win at Maryland. The Eagles reach yet another 8 win season and Coach Spaziani kept the ship steady among a lot of offseason turmoil. BC and Virginia Tech are similar in that they are not all that flashy, but they win–and that’s all that matters. They will now not go to a bowl that they deserve and will once again be underrated in next year’s preseason rankings–but that’s just what BC does.

>The two embattled coaches of Al Groh and Ralph Friedgen went out with losses this season, but will they reach the same end? We have been telling you for months that Groh was gone, but Friedgen is tricky due to money and “coach-in-waiting” issues. Neither team quit on their coaches–they just were not all that good. Friedgen seems to believe he is going to be back, but we will see.

>Raycom saw a duel of senior QBs as they combined for over 700 yards passing and 8 passing TDs with Wake’s Skinner and Duke’s Lewis. The Deacs would finish off their season on a high note with the 45-34 victory. Both teams are looking to draw momentum from this season and both will have new QBs at the helm next season. Duke’s faltering down the stretch was not a good sign that Cutcliffe has turned it around–consistency is always the issue when turning around a perennial losing program. As for Wake Forest, Coach Grobe has set the mark high with the 2006 ACC Championship and will continue to have to measure most seasons to that.

It’s ACC Championship Week! What are your thoughts on this week? ACC Championship picks/keys? What should Maryland and Virginia due with their situations? Is Duke really turning it around? I would love to see your thoughts.

UNC Football steps on the gas in the ACC + looking ahead to the Iron Bowl: Alabama vs. Auburn

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

There is nothing like a weekend in New England to get you in the Thanksgiving holiday mood!  This past Saturday I called the North Carolina-Boston College game for ESPN radio and we had a good one. It didn’t start out that way, though, with the Tar Heels defense scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter after their offense had already put up seven points. It had the makings of a blowout, but the Eagles made a game of it. Ultimately, North Carolina put the game away with a late TD and won 31-13. There were ten turnovers in the contest, six by Boston College – and that brings me to my first point of the week. Do you know who Everett Withers is? Time’s up. He is the Tar Heels defensive coordinator and his troops have been a turnover machine the last few weeks. They have 12 interceptions in the last month and have scored a total of four touchdowns in the last two games.

Back in October North Carolina suffered a defensive collapse in a loss to Florida State. But they turned the season around the following Thursday night with a win at Virginia Tech. Withers’s game plan against Tyrod Taylor was superb and North Carolina has gone on to win four in a row after the debacle against the Seminoles. Everett Withers is a big reason why.

One more note on the Tar Heels. They need to get jacked up when they face NC State.  The Wolfpack treat this like the game of the year and have proven it on the field. Last year I called this game for TV and when I talked with the NC State coaches before the contest you could tell that, for them, this was like Clemson vs South Carolina, Michigan-Ohio State, Auburn and Alabama. The Tar Heels acted like it was just another day at the office. Not that they didn’t care, but it was just another game, or so it seemed to me.

Here are a couple of funny quotes from our meeting with the BC players on the Friday before the contest with North Carolina.  Mike McLaughlin is the Eagles middle linebacker. The senior told us that in last year’s game at North Carolina, Tar Heel wide receiver Hakeem Nicks “wrote his NFL contract on my back”.  Nicks, now a rookie with the New York Giants, caught three TD passes and ran for a fourth in the North Carolina victory.

BC quarterback Dave Shinskie, a 25 year old freshman, talked about working with 69 year old offensive coordinator Gary Tranquill. Tranquill was on Woody Hayes staff at Ohio State in the late 60s and has also coached for Bill Belichick and Nick Saban, among others.  Shinskie said Tranquill read a poem at a team meeting the day before about the “Mighty Casey”.  Of course the poem ends with “there is no joy in Mudville, because the mighty Casey struck out.”  Shinskie then looked at us and said, “Why would a dude write a poem about a guy who choked?”  We had no answer.

As you give thanks this weekend and spend time with family and friends, please say a prayer for two staffers from NC State. Dana Bible, the offensive coordinator for the football team, is battling leukemia and Gary Hahn, the long time “Voice of the Wolfpack,” is fighting prostate cancer. May they be back on the sidelines and in the broadcast booth soon.

I’ve got a double header this weekend for ESPN Radio: Auburn hosts Alabama on Friday and USC faces UCLA on Saturday.  Check your local listings.  Have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving holiday.

Week 8 of ACC Games and What Knowledge We’ve Gained

Another week…more knowledge…

ACC Coastal Champ:
Georgia Tech

I’m stepping it up this week with the champion instead of a list of contenders and Georgia Tech takes the Coastal. They cannot play defense, but the offense is just mesmerizing. The Jackets would have had over 600 total yards if they did not take a couple knees at the end of the Vanderbilt game. Their offense is bruising and wearing opponents down with so many quality options to run the football with. Maybe, they do not even need a defense to win the ACC, but still a little football to go.

ACC Atlantic Champ: Clemson

The one thing I try not to be is jaded by teams that frequently made me look rather dumb. Clemson, is one of those teams. I picked them to win the ACC in 2007 and 2008 and was oh-so-close to being right. There is a different mentality with this Tigers’ team this year. I could see on the sidelines with these Tigers. There is no way that a team playing this well should lose to Florida State at home, NC State on the road, or their final ACC date with Virginia at home. Watch for Spiller and Ford to have outstanding games against FSU coming up if the Tigers use the tight end as effectively as they did against Miami Saturday.

Zone Blitzes

>NC State and Florida State provided another ACC offensive classic and defensive catastrophe in a 45-42 ‘Noles win. FSU cannot put this much pressure on their QB Ponder to win games for them. It will come back to bite them and will start with Clemson this week if they do not fix some things. As for NC State, who would have thought they would be win-less in the ACC going into November? And next week’s game with Maryland could be the only win left on their schedule. The difference between FSU and NC State is that the ‘Noles have the better QB who is able to pull out the tough games. Wilson is a talent, but is still developing.

>Duke Blue Devils football is relevant in November. Duke Blue Devils football has a better shot at the Coastal than Virginia Tech right now. The superlatives abound when you talk about Duke QB Thaddeus Lewis as he would engineer the key game-winning drive down by 5 with under 5 minutes to go. They just have to split their final four games to get to a bowl now.

>Virginia Tech is not Virginia Tech…atleast not at this point in the season. The Hokies have blown a tire going into the final turn of this ACC season and are basically done unless they enter a tiebreak with Miami for the Coastal. It was really a complete team failure as the Hokies could not move the ball effectively enough and the defense could not stop an offense that had been poor all season. Where the Hokies go from here is interesting because they really have not been in this situation in a while.

>Miami is not dead yet. They struggled through 3 quarters and into the 4th, but a key forced turnover and some great catches by the Canes wide receivers would be the difference in a one point ACC road win over Wake Forest. Miami just needs to take care of business down the stretch and they are in the hunt for the ACC if GT stumbles–also, they have BCS bowl aspirations still alive.

>UNC’s offense is improving and the Heels are with them. North Carolina is having to run all kinds of funky plays/formations, but they are better and that is all that matters. The Tar Heels are having to mask a lack of an effective traditional offense by adopting misdirection plays to keep the defense off-balance. They enter probably the biggest UNC-Duke football game in decades this Saturday as UNC needs the win to go for bowl elgiblity while Duke could stay in the hunt for the Coastal with a victory.

>Al Groh is toast. He was pretty much fired in September behind the scenes in Charlottesville and this loss wiped away all momentum he gained with the quick 2-0 start in October.

>Jim Grobe is not Jim Grobe. Wake Forest is a shell of what they were a couple years ago, but that just comes from Grobe setting our unrealistic expectations of them. He has done a masterful job at Wake, but the gaps of talent and consistency are starting to show now.

What have you gained from this week’s slate of ACC games? It is getting to crunch time in the ACC and we will see who can keep it together.

SATURDAYS vs. SUNDAYS

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Now that I am doing play by play for only college football and not the NFL, a lot of people ask me which level of the game I prefer broadcasting. This is the first time in 20 years I am not doing the NFL either for a team or network and the first time its college football only since 1987.  So, I have put together a list of the differences and my feelings about broadcasting college football and the NFL.

1. Game preparation is about the same, but NFL teams are limited to 53 man rosters and only 46 players dress on game day. College football rosters are larger, so it is more time consuming putting together a spotting board for each team and familiarizing yourself with the players that will touch the ball.  For example, in the NFL, a team might dress three or four wide receivers, seven offensive linemen, two or three running backs and maybe two tight ends. In college football, there could be seven or eight wide receivers, five or six running backs, three or four tight ends and up to 12 offensive lineman. As a broadcaster, it helps to see a team a few times – that really helped when I called last Saturday’s meeting between Miami (I had already done four Miami games) and Clemson (one previous contest).

2. Rules are basically the same, but the NFL could take a cue from the college game and change the way it plays overtime. In the college game, both teams get the ball; in the NFL, if you win the toss, take the kick and score, the game is over.  I would like to see the NFL at least give the other team a shot at scoring if the team that first has the ball does get points. The college game is way too long, usually three hours and forty-five minutes or more. The best way to speed things up would be to get rid of the rule that stops the clock to move the chains after a first down. Halftimes are 20 minutes, and I think this time length was established years ago to give both schools’ bands a chance to perform. I would cut it to 15 minutes.  The NFL has a 12 minute halftime.

3. Travel is easier in the NFL because you are going to major cities with plenty of hotel space, restaurants, and highways to get you to and from the stadium in a decent amount of time. If you have ever tried to get out of Clemson after a game, you know why I mention this. I sat for two hours in my car in the parking lot on Labor Day night a couple years ago after a Tiger home game before even getting out to the local streets around the stadium.

4. Atmosphere is different and there seems to be more passion with college football fans. I think this is because while the players change each year, there are the alumni ties to the school that will never change. There are some NFL fans that have this type of passion, including those in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Buffalo.

5. When I call a college football game, I don’t criticize the players much because they are still students. In the NFL, they are getting paid very good money, and if they drop passes or throw interceptions, they deserve to get pounded by the media. Coaches are fair game at both levels as far as I am concerned.

There you have it – what I consider a few key differences in broadcasting college and pro football.

Week 7 of ACC Games: What Knowledge We’ve Gained

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Welcome to your weekly answer to the “what we’ve learned” columns…

For my ranking of the ACC 1-12, check out my ACC Power Poll over at OnTheB-Rink.com/blog.

Week 7: What Knowledge We’ve Gained

The ACC went into the spin cycle this weekend and here we are a week later with a new prediction for the Coastal. Here’s the standings…

ATLANTIC DIVISION
School Conference Pct. Overall Pct.
Boston College 3-2 .600 5-3 .625
Clemson 3-2 .600 4-3 .571
Wake Forest 2-2 .500 4-4 .500
Florida State 1-3 .250 3-4 .429
Maryland 1-3 .250 2-6 .250
NC State 0-3 .000 3-4 .429
COASTAL DIVISION
School Conference Pct. Overall Pct.
Georgia Tech 5-1 .833 7-1 .875
Virginia Tech 3-1 .750 5-2 .714
Duke 2-1 .667 4-3 .571
Virginia 2-1 .667 3-4 .429
Miami 2-2 .500 5-2 .714
North Carolina 0-3 .000 4-3 .571

(Graphic per TheACC)

Coastal front-runner(s) after week 7 of ACC games(In order): Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Miami.

What a week can do to the standings! Miami had all kinds of issues against Clemson Saturday and have gone from the penthouse to the outhouse with being 5TH in the ACC’s Coastal now(wow). Now, you are like, “Um, Brandon, Georgia Tech should be listed first.” I agree with you based on what knowledge we’ve gained so far, but I called it back in July and I’m going to stick with it for now. Yes, Duke takes Georgia Tech down in Wallace Wade Stadium to knock the Jackets out of the race and vaults Virginia Tech back on top. (Yes, I know its nuts–we’ll see after next week if I stick with it).

Atlantic front-runner(s) after week 7 of ACC games(in order with no coin flip this week): Clemson, Boston College.

Oh, you’re still here after I picked Duke–cool. Clemson put up two incredible performances against quality ACC teams with 75 combined points in the last two weeks and only allowed 40. Clemson has an offense which is the scariest thing for the division and the ACC with how strong the Tigers’ D is. You play Clemson and GT right now in the ACC Championship Game–I’ve got Clemson(man, GT fans are not going to like me after this post). As for BC, they lost out of conference which does not hurt them here, but cannot lose and need Clemson to lose which is far from an enviable position.

***Screen(ed) Passes***

>Virginia played admirably in the first half, but Georgia Tech grinded out the second half and wore out the ‘Hoos defense. Virginia very well could slip to .500 after the hot start in the ACC with a home game against Duke next week.

>Duke has a winning record in the ACC. The Duke Blue Devils are above .500 in the ACC with 4 wins already and a game coming that they should be favored in against Virginia who they throttled last season in Wallace Wade. Oh and ACC Player of Year, meet Duke QB Thaddeus Lewis. With a win next week, the Blue Devils will be bowling with a combination of 2 wins vs. UNC, Georgia Tech, Miami, and Wake Forest(under my earlier scenario, the only thing keeping Duke from taking the division is not sweeping their road games).

>Florida State does have a pulse. My preseason pick for the Atlantic showed some signs of why I would have done such a thing Thursday, but the ‘Noles defense is still struggling. They have what should be an easy home game against NC State, but won’t be coming up(over/under is set at 363 points in this one).

>North Carolina and Maryland are in a race for the ACC’s worst and both put up impressively awful performances. UNC would play a solid first half and even grab an 18 point lead in the 3rd quarter, but poor coaching decisions and a few bad throws by the QB doomed them. Maryland was able to keep it closer with Duke then I thought they would, but just could not break through when only down by one possession for most of the second half.

There’s another week in the ACC in the books…What’s your thoughts? I’m sure I don’t have to point out where to voice your opinions, Georgia Tech fans.

“Spreading” Georgia Tech’s Wealth

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Since the start of the season, I have broadcast three Georgia Tech football games: the thriller against Clemson, their loss at Miami and this past weekend’s huge win over Virginia Tech. In the process of covering these games, I have heard and read a number of comments about the spread option offense run by Jackets’ head coach Paul Johnson and the predictions of its long term success in “the Flats”.  The biggest concern I’ve heard voiced is the ability to recruit top players at just about any position on the offensive side of the ball. Right now Johnson is doing it with players who arrived under the Chan Gailey regime.  Would quarterback Josh Nesbitt, running back Jonathan Dwyer and wide receiver Damaryius Thomas have committed to Georgia Tech knowing that they would be put in a wishbone type run-oriented offense?

Johnson has been successful running this type of offense at Georgia Southern and Navy.  The critics wonder if he can do it on a consistent basis in the ACC. Let’s face it, top quality high school athletes go to college with hopes of making it to the NFL. In talking with NFL scouts, they say it is difficult to judge how good offensive linemen are in a wishbone offense because they rarely pass block. Wide receivers might shun going to Atlanta because the Jackets don’t throw it very often and, since they don’t throw it very often, quarterbacks who think they have what it takes to play on Sunday (NFL) would be hard pressed to prove it in the wishbone. There just aren’t many schools that run the type of offense that Georgia Tech runs and you don’t see it at all in the NFL.

This brings me back to my initial question: how successful will Paul Johnson be in the long term? I don’t have the answer, no one does at this point, and it will come down to Johnson’s ability to recruit top quality players to compete against top ranked teams year in and year out.

I give Georgia Tech credit for not scheduling a “cupcake” for homecoming. Virginia Tech was ranked fourth in the country as they came to Atlanta last week. Check out my video blog this week for the sights and sounds of some of the pre-game festivities.

In wrapping up our broadcast last week, I was talking about Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Miami all having one loss as they battle for the Coastal Division title – and then quickly reminded our listeners that Virginia is 2-0 in the ACC.  Al Groh has quieted the critics and can get everyone’s attention if his team can beat the Yellow Jackets this weekend.

The wild and wacky Atlantic division has four teams with two losses; the other two with three losses and all still have shot at getting to the ACC title game.

This Saturday I am off to Miami for the Canes game against Clemson for ESPN Radio. Check your local listings.

Week 6 of ACC Games: What Knowledge We’ve Gained

Monday, October 19th, 2009

What’s up and welcome to another edition of WKWG!

If you want to see my thoughts on the ACC teams 1-12, check out my ACC Power Poll.

Week 6 of ACC Games: What Knowledge We’ve Gained

*The contenders have been narrowed. Here’s the current ACC standings and I’ll give who  I think can win…

ATLANTIC DIVISION
School Conference Pct. Overall Pct.
Boston College 3-2 .600 5-2 .714
Wake Forest 2-2 .500 4-3 .571
Clemson 2-2 .500 3-3 .500
Maryland 1-2 .333 2-5 .286
NC State 0-3 .000 3-4 .429
Florida State 0-3 .000 2-4 .333
COASTAL DIVISION
School Conference Pct. Overall Pct.
Virginia 2-0 1.000 3-3 .500
Georgia Tech 4-1 .800 6-1 .857
Miami 2-1 .667 5-1 .833
Virginia Tech 3-1 .750 5-2 .714
Duke 1-1 .500 3-3 .500
North Carolina 0-2 .000 4-2 .667

(Per the ACC)

Mark it down (right now), for the Coastal (in order of how I think they will finish): Miami, Georgia Tech, and Virginia Tech.

They should end up tied at the end of the season which brings out the calculators for tiebreakers. If it falls to the BCS tiebreaker of who is ranked highest and is not within 5 spots of a team that beat them, Miami takes the cake. They will go undefeated and should be five spots higher than Virginia Tech at the end of the season as that would be their one hang up.

For the Atlantic (in order of how the coin toss worked out): Clemson, Boston College.

I think Clemson goes 5-3 in the ACC. Barring an amazing performance or poor on Miami’s part, Clemson should lose in Land Shark, but they have an easy last 3 ACC games. For BC, they have an easy road too, but from what I’ve seen, I just cannot see BC winning all three games–just not consistent enough for my taste and have not played well on the road at all. Now, you can say that about Clemson too–thus, the coin toss.

***Quick Slants***

*Clemson showed up when they needed too Saturday on Raycom. The Tigers’ defense dominated–and with that kind of performance, there are not many teams that could beat them.

*Wake Forest is done in the Atlantic with losing tiebreakers to the big two in the division. They could get in a Coastal-like three way tie, but probably would not fare well there either.

*BC’s Montel Harris is a beast that should be constantly fed in the Eagles’ remaining 5 games.

*NC State cannot play defense at all. They would be just as good just rolling Russell Wilson out there with his RBs/WRs on defense so they might have a better chance to score defensively.

*I know, I know, where are the ‘Hoos?! I give them props for the wins–hey, they are undefeated, but can anybody tell me from that Maryland game that they are serious contenders? Absolutely no way, but I applaud how they have recovered from the tough start.

*Maryland just is not good.

*We will learn something about the soul of the Tar Heels and ‘Noles this Thursday–neither team has an ACC win and one win probably will not alter a course to a bowl-less season either.
